버스 174 (2002)

이 영화는 리오 데 자이네루에서 2000년 6월 12일(브라질의 발렌타인 데이)에 벌어졌던 버스 납치극에 대한 세밀하고도 심도 깊은 조사 과정을 담고 있다.
4시간 반동안 벌어진 이 납치극은 비디오 화면, 납치범들, 경찰, 공무원과의 인터뷰 등 폭넓은 자료를 통해 세밀히 다루어짐으로써 종국에는 왜 브라질과 같이 경제적 어려움을 겪는 나라들이 그렇게 폭력적인 사회가 될 수 밖에 없는지에 대해 설파하고 있다.

Bus 174 is a careful investigation of the hijack of a bus in Rio, based on an extensive research of stock footage, interviews and official documents.
The hijack took place in June 12, 2000 (Valentines day in Brazil) and was broadcast live for 4 hours. The whole country stopped to watch the drama on TV.
The film tells 2 parallel stories. Not only does it explain the dramatic events that unfolded as the police tried, and failed, to handle the hijack situation; but it also tells the amazing life story of hijacker, revealing how a typical Rio de Janeiro street kid was transformed into a violent criminal because society systemically denied him any kind of social existence.
Both stories are interwoven in such a way that they end up explaining why Brazil, and other countries with similar social and economic problems, are so violent.

호세 파딜라 감독은 2000년 6월 브라질 전역을 통해 생중계되면서 충격으로 몰아 넣었던 버스 납치극이 벌어지던 근처에 살고 있었다고 한다. 집에 가지 못하고 텔레비전 생중계를 보던 감독은 리오 데 자이네루의 폭력적인 현실을 상징하는 이 사건에 흥미를 가지게 되었고, 놀랍게도 이 사건의 주범인 산드로라는 청년이 1993년 경찰들이 거리의 소년 8명을 살해한 ‘칸델라리아 학살’의 생존자 중의 하나라는 것을 알게 된다. 이 이야기로 다큐멘터리를 만들고자 결심한 그는 브라질의 대도시 리오 데 자이네루의 가장 폭력적인 사건으로 기록될 두 개의 사건에 모두 연루된 이 산드로라는 청년의 삶과 버스 납치극의 순간들을 직조하면서 오늘의 브라질이 직면한 폭력의 실체와 근원, 또한 시청자의 알 권리를 내세워 더 큰 폭력을 야기하는 미디어의 부조리함을 고발하고 있다.
2001년에 착수해서 무려 18개월이나 걸려 완성한 이 다큐멘터리는 리오 데 자이네루 영화제에서 작품상과 관객상을 동시에 수상했으며 2003년 최고의 다큐멘터리 화제작으로 떠오르면서 브라질, 미국 등에 극장배급되었다. 영화의 클라이막스에 해당하는 후반부는 잊지 못한 서늘함을 남기며 이 두 시간이 넘는 다큐멘터리를 보는 관객들의 얼굴에 찬 물을 끼얹을 것이다.

67년 리오 데 자이네루 출생의 감독은 프로듀서겸 시나리오 작가로 활동해 오면서 (90)와 같은 영화를 만들었다. 또한 나 와 같은 내셔널 지오그래픽의 다큐멘터리를 공동제작하고 연출했다. 그는 첫 장편 다큐멘터리 <174번 버스>로 수많은 영화제에서 수상했다.

Jose Padilha was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He began his film career as executive producer of the fictional feature film Boca de Ouro (90). He wrote and produced The Charcoal People (00) and co-directed and co-produced the National Geographic television documentaries “Pantanal Cowboys” and “Facing the Jaguar.” Bus 174 (02), which won the award for best documentary at the 2002 Sao Paulo film festival and received a special mention citation from Amnesty International, is his first feature documentary.
